The audience greeted the State Kalmyk Dance Theatre “Oirats” in the ancient Russian town of Shuya, Ivanovo Oblast, with a full house, thunderous applause, and standing ovations.
The exact date of the settlement’s founding is lost in the mists of time, but the first reliable mention in historical documents dates back to 1393 — the Nikonor Chronicle already described the town as a significant settlement.
It is located in the city of…Shuya is located in the interfluve of the Volga and Klyazma rivers, to the southeast of the regional center — Ivanovo. The Teza River (a tributary of the Klyazma) flows through the city from north to south; its length within the city limits is 6.6 km.
The bell tower of the Resurrection Cathedral is the hallmark of the city and one of the tallest freestanding Orthodox bell towers in the world. The construction of the bell tower began in 1810 according to the design of the Italian architect Gaudenzio Maricelli, but in 1819 the bell tower, brought to the fourth tier, collapsed. Mikhail Savateev, a peasant from the Vladimir district, completed the construction under the supervision of the provincial architect Yevgraf Petrov in 1833. The height of the bell tower from the base to the tip of the cross is 106 meters.
Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. The background.
The wooden parish church of the Resurrection was mentioned on the site of the cathedral in 1629. In 1655, the iconographer Gerasim Ikonnikov painted for her a copy of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, which later became known as Shuisko‑Smolenskaya. After numerous miracles performed by the icon, it was decided to turn the church into a cathedral church. In 1667, a stone five-domed church was erected on the site of the wooden church.
